Internet troubleshooting? Don’t reset your modem.

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

One of the first steps individuals take when they have internet connection problems is resetting their modem. DON’T!

Resetting your modem is not a fix and will make things worse rather than better. Here are a few reasons you shouldn't reset your modem when looking for internet connectivity problems.

Your internet connection may be disrupted by first resetting your modem. Your modem resets the entire connection procedure when you reset it, which might take several minutes or longer to reprogram. You won't have an internet connection during this period, and any current activity, including streaming or online gaming, will be halted.

Your internet settings will be lost if you reset your modem. For your modem to connect to the internet, it needs to know your network name and login details, which it remembers. When resetting your modem, these settings are lost, so you will have to input them again. This procedure can be time-consuming and stressful when you don't have the information.

Rebooting your modem can result in more issues. Your modem will malfunction and lose internet connectivity if you reset it. In this situation, you will need to contact your internet service provider (ISP), which may be time-consuming and expensive.

Other networked devices will lose connection if your modem is rebooted.

Try some other troubleshooting techniques. For instance, you may frequently resolve the issue without resetting the modem by restarting your router. You can turn off the power for 5 minutes and then restart the modem. Please note it will take a few minutes to reconnect. Another thing you can do is look for frayed wires and check for software updates.

In conclusion, the way to fix internet problems is not to reset your modem. It will interfere with your internet service, result in the loss of your internet settings, create other issues, and break the connection of other networked devices. Try other troubleshooting techniques, and if the problem persists, call your internet service provider.
